Program Overview

In 2023, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Taiwan Tech established a 3+2 dual-degree program with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).

Students complete the required courses for the Taiwan Tech Materials Science and Engineering undergraduate program, together with the university’s general-education requirements, during their first three years at Taiwan Tech.

Students who satisfy the program requirements, receive a departmental recommendation, and are admitted by UIUC may complete graduate-level coursework at UIUC during their fourth and fifth years.

Upon successful completion of all requirements, students can earn the following two degrees within five years:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Taiwan Tech
  • Master of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering from UIUC

Program Features

  • Provides students with an opportunity to study at a globally recognized materials science and engineering program.
  • Strengthens students’ preparation for doctoral study at leading international universities or professional employment in the United States.
  • Students begin studying at UIUC in their fourth undergraduate year.
  • GRE scores are not required when applying to this program.
  • Students who have not yet met the English-language requirement may, subject to UIUC approval, submit their scores later or attend an approved UIUC English-language program.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
  • Students can complete both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years instead of the six years generally required when the two programs are completed separately.

Departmental Review Requirements

  1. Academic transcripts and class ranking, with a cumulative GPA above 3.0
  2. Proof of English-language proficiency:
    • TOEFL score of 103 or above, or
    • IELTS score of 7.5 or above
    The required English-language score may be submitted by February 15.
  3. A list of completed courses and a proposed course plan for the second semester of the third year
  4. Other supporting documents that may strengthen the application

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much will tuition, accommodation, and living expenses cost?

During the first year at UIUC, corresponding to the student’s fourth undergraduate year at Taiwan Tech, the student retains active enrollment status at Taiwan Tech and must pay one year of Taiwan Tech tuition and miscellaneous fees.

Students are also responsible for two years of UIUC tuition, accommodation, and living expenses. The UIUC portion of the program requires 36 credit hours.

Based on UIUC’s 2022–2023 tuition rates, the estimated annual tuition was USD 36,798. Including accommodation, living expenses, and other costs, the estimated annual total was approximately USD 45,000–49,000 (approximately NTD 1.5–1.6 million).

2. What are the course schedule and credit requirements?

  1. Students must complete all required courses in the Taiwan Tech Materials Science and Engineering curriculum within their first three years.
  2. Students begin two years of UIUC graduate coursework during their fourth undergraduate year.
  3. The UIUC master’s degree is primarily coursework-based and does not require a master’s thesis. Students may nevertheless participate in independent research in a laboratory according to their interests. Independent-study credits will appear on the official transcript.
  4. In addition to completing the 36 credit hours required for the UIUC master’s degree, students must take relevant UIUC graduate electives that can be transferred to satisfy the remaining elective-credit requirements for the Taiwan Tech bachelor’s degree.
  5. Transfer of the remaining Taiwan Tech elective credits must be completed after the first year of graduate study at UIUC. Students must receive their Taiwan Tech bachelor’s degree before continuing to the second year of the UIUC master’s program.
